Life... don't talk to me about life...

08:24 Mar 29 2006
Times Read: 841

It is of course well known that careless talk costs lives, but the full scale of the problem is not always appreciated.

For instance, at the very moment that ElderDaniel said, 'I honestly care nothing for Favor points nor for our rating,' a freak wormhole opened up in the fabric of the space-time continuum and carried his words far far back in time across almost infinite reaches of space to a distant galaxy where strange and warlike beings were poised on the brink of a frightful interstellar battle.

The two opposing leaders were meeting for the last time.

A dreadful silence fell across the conference table as the commander of the Vl'hurgs, resplendent in his black jewelled battle shorts, gazed levelly at the G'Gugvuntt leader squatting opposite him in a cloud of green sweet-smelling steam, and, with a million sleek and horribly beweaponed star cruisers poised to unleash electric death at his single word of command, challenged the vile creature to take back what it had said about his mother.

The creature stirred in his sickly broiling vapour, and at that very moment the words, 'I honestly care nothing for Favor points nor for our rating' drifted across the conference table.

Unfortunately, in the Vl'hurg tongue this was the most dreadful insult imaginable, and there was nothing for it but to wage terrible war for centuries.

Eventually, of course, after their galaxy had been decimated over a few thousand years, it was realised that the whole thing had been a ghastly mistake, and so the two opposing battle fleets settled their few remaining differences in order to launch a joint attack on our own galaxy---now positively identified as the source of the offending remark.

For thousands more years the mighty ships tore across the empty wastes of space and finally dived screaming on to the first planet they came across---which happened to be Earth---where due to a terrible miscalculation of scale the entire battle fleet was accidentally swallowed by a small dog.

Those who study the complex interplay of cause and effect in the history of the universe say that this sort of thing is going on all the time, but that we are powerless to prevent it.

'It's just life,' they say.

Kai su, teknon?

I'm a writer. I work hard in my personal correspondences to choose the right words to present to people. I often wonder how many readers of my words however fear that I might therefore be a skilled manipulator. My eloquence in certain times, such as this missive, might lend you to believe this could be true.

However, I choose words carefully so that my intentions are to be made as clear as I can make them. You only have my word that I mean not to mislead you. What would I gain by deceit?

I honestly care nothing for Favor points nor for our rating. If anyone here doubts my resolve on that matter, you need only see that we are in fact in "last place" in the standings. But it is not I that you see rallying the troops as it were.

We're here, in one House, enjoying each other's company, scattered across the world, but here in friendship. That's what matters to me.

Yes, also, where appropriate, I also like to use Latin phrases.

"Quidquid Latine dictum sit altum viditur."

-- "Anything said in Latin sounds profound."

It is indeed true, I like to use quotes, no matter what language they are from. If I need to say something that has been said before, I try to use the most eloquent examples.

It is in this regard that I wish to revisit some of my goals for this Household.

Our House Motto: "And there shall the beasts of the desert meet with the jackals, and the wild goat shall cry to his fellow; the lilith also shall settle there, and find for herself a place of rest." - Isaiah 34:14, J.N.Darby Translation (1890 CE)

This version of a quote from the Bible was chosen because it uses the original Hebrew word "lilith" where other versions would use "hag", "night-demon", or "screech owl" -- yes, screech owl, our Mascot.

But, the quote itself was chosen because I feel it truly represents the purpose of this Household. In the midst of what seems the harshest environment around you, here with us, those of your kind, you too will find a home.

I have inducted people into this House whom I admire, respect, and care for. I have traded only when the people themselves asked to be traded in or out. I mourned every release, and rejoiced with every newcomer.

Our Mission Statement: "To be able under all circumstances to practice five things constitutes perfect virtue; these five things are gravity, generosity of soul, sincerity, earnestness and kindness." - Confucius (551 BCE - 479 BCE), The Confucian Analects

It is my personal mission to strive for these five virtues, plus one. I therefore would like it to be our consensual mission as a Household. Maybe I'm a dreamer. I'm an Aquarius, what else can I say?

~ Gravity ~ In this letter, I am being serious, perhaps more now than ever.

~ Generosity of Soul ~ I give my time and energy to VampireRave and to House Lunazure, asking nothing in return.

~ Sincerity ~ I mean these words I place here before you.

~ Earnestness ~ I am determined to do that which is right, and make right the wrongs that I can.

~ Kindness ~ I've been called altruistic to a fault by many who would consider this to be a fault, and not a virtue as I see it.

~ Finally, my sixth virtue, Frivolity ~ I try to always have fun no matter what I do.

I don't ask for much. The things I do ask for are respect and understanding. All the rest are details.

If anyone who reads this doubts my words, then I only have one thing left to say.

Quid dicam non invenio.
